Special topic

Our special topic teaching datasets include data from unique surveys on important topics such as ethnicity, experiences of the covid-19 pandemic, and sexual attitudes and lifestyles.

EVENS - Evidence for Equality National Survey

The Evidence for Equality National Survey (EVENS) provides unique insights into the experiences of ethnic minorities in Great Britain. The open access teaching dataset includes the following topics:

  • Experiences of racism in different settings by ethnic and religious background.

  • Sense of belonging and importance of ethnic and religious identity.

  • Experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic relating to health, employment and financial security.

  • Political attitudes and support for Black Lives Matter.

It can be used in conjunction with the free e-book, allowing students to reproduce the analysis in the book or to carry out their own research.

Understanding Society COVID-19 Study Teaching Dataset

The Understanding Society COVID-19 Study teaching dataset is derived from the Understanding Society COVID-19 survey - a longitudinal survey that collected data during the COVID-19 pandemic. The teaching dataset provides an invaluable resource for analysing the socioeconomic and health impacts of the pandemic on individuals and households in the UK. It includes cross-sectional and longitudinal data files. Topics include physical and mental health, working from home, COVID symptoms and test, home schooling, volunteering, access to healthcare services and more. The longitudinal file includes more variables than the cross-sectional file with repeated measures to allow longitudinal analysis. The Understanding Society COVID-19 teaching dataset is available from the UK Data Service after a quick registration

National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal), 2010-2012

The British National Surveys of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal) are some of the largest and most detailed studies of sexual attitudes and behaviour in the world. Natsal-3 interviewed 15,162 adults aged 16-74 in 2010-2012. With input from the Natsal Team at UCL, we created two teaching datasets based on this amazing data:

SN 8786 National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles, 2010-2012: Open Access Teaching Dataset

Designed to be easy to use and easy to access, this open access teaching dataset includes 20 variables and a subset of cases. The dataset is freely downloadable, and can be shared and uploaded to learning platforms without the need of registration. Topics include attitudes towards sexual lifestyles such as same sex relationships and sex in the media, health and disability, religious beliefs, relationships status, and many demographic variables.

SN 8735 National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles, 2010-2012: Teaching Dataset

Our larger teaching dataset includes the full sample and a wider range of variables (130 variables) on topics such as adultery, same sex relationships and sex in the media, body measurement, alcohol consumption, drug use, deprivation measures, contraception use, geographic variables and more. The dataset comes with instructor notes that provide ideas for using the data to teach different topics and methods. It is available after a quick registration.
